Supporting and Retaining Teachers of Color:
New York

Teacher Diversity Policy

Goal

While bringing more teachers of color into the classroom in the first place is critical, those efforts count for little in the long run if schools do not retain these teachers. States can fund incentives (for example, loan forgiveness or other benefits) that help to retain teachers of color specifically, and teachers more generally. Policymakers can also support retention programs or initiatives specifically designed for teachers of color. In order to understand how successfully schools are retaining a diverse workforce, policymakers should collect, publish and monitor data on teacher retention, disaggregated by race and reported at the school level. This goal is new and ungraded in 2023.
