The state should support performance pay but in a manner that recognizes its appropriate uses and limitations.
South Dakota does not currently support performance pay statewide; however, the state received a $20 million Teacher Incentive Fund grant in 2007 to pilot a five-year program implementing a performance-based compensation system across 10 public school districts. Incentives are based on school improvements in student achievement, as well as performance of leadership.
