Recruiting Teachers of Color: District of
Columbia

Teacher Diversity Policy

Goal

To build a diverse teacher workforce, states should work proactively to attract more prospective teachers of color to enter into the teacher pipeline. Policymakers can consider strategies like establishing and funding high school teacher pipeline programs, registered apprenticeships in teaching, Grow Your Own Programs, or teacher residencies with a focus on recruiting candidates of color. States should set recruitment goals and collect data on preservice educators in order to understand how many teacher candidates of color enter into and complete pathways to becoming licensed educators. This goal is new and ungraded in 2023.
