Close Box

Methodology for Length of elementary student school day

Depending on how the district presents the information, the answer to this question may represent "total" hours (which includes breaks, lunch and recess), or "instructional" hours (which does NOT include breaks, lunch and recess). Note: districts may require student hours beyond the minimum number of hours set forth in district policy. "Minimum" hours is normally the minimum required by the state. In some cases, school hours may vary slightly from school to school. NCTQ normally chooses to either give a range of hours, or, the hours under which a clear majority of schools operates. Isolated schools (alternative schools, special academies, etc) often have considerably longer or shorter school days; our data reflects the hours in traditional schools.

Methodology for Length of secondary student school day

Depending on how the district presents the information, the answer to this question may represent "total" hours (which includes breaks, lunch and recess), or "instructional" hours (which does NOT include breaks, lunch and recess) or the "minimum" hours which is normally the minimum hours required by the state.

Days in student school year

Close Box

Methodology for Days in student school year

Based on the school year calendar and includes all days on which students are required to come to school (including testing days, early dismissal days, etc.). Discrepancies between district and state responses to this question are frequently due to the specific wording of the state law; most frequently a state law provides the minimum number of student days but allows districts to have a shorter/longer year as long as districts meet a minimum number of instructional hours in that school year. Another cause for discrepancy may be due to how we calculate the student days based on the information provided in the district calendar.
