Boston, MA —  A compensation system that includes better pay for excellent teachers and teacher leaders is an essential element of a strong, modern teaching profession.  NCTQ’s Smart Money makes it abundantly clear that if we want to recruit and retain effective teachers, the time to rethink teacher salaries is now.  Districts around the nation are beginning to recognize this need and to listen to teachers on this important issue.  One example is Indianapolis Public Schools, which recently made changes to its compensation system based on the recommendations from Teach Plus Teaching Policy Fellows.  We hope that many more school districts follow suit and address the problems that NCTQ identified in the report.
