Methodology for Length of scheduled teacher workday

NCTQ does not calculate half days. Therefore if students have a half day, while the other half of the day is a teacher work day/professional development, that day is treated as a full day for all.

Methodology for Days in teacher contract year

As of August 1, 2019, the answer is based on the teacher contract year for veteran teachers, as reported in district materials and not on NCTQ's analysis of the annual calendar. Note that some districts count holidays as part of their contract year and others do not. Prior to August 1, 2019, the answer was based on the school year calendar and included all days on which teachers were required to be on site / had to report and perform some type of duty (e.g., PD days, teacher-parent conferences). Only days required for veteran teachers were counted (i.e., any PD or workdays for new teachers were not included).

Methodology for Teacher days on-site without students

As of August 1, 2019, the answer is based on the days teachers are required to be on-site without students, as reported in district materials and not on NCTQ's analysis of the annual calendar. Districts use varying terminology, so teacher on-site days may include workdays, planning days, professional development days, in-service days, grade preparation days, etc. Prior to August 1, 2019, the answer was based on the school year calendar and included both the number of full days teachers were on-site without students as well as a portion of any partial days on which a teacher was required to be on-site without students (e.g., 0.5 was added if there was an early release day for students but a teacher was required to remain on site for the full day). Only required days for veteran teachers were counted (i.e., any PD or workdays for new teachers were not included).
