Finally, the University of North Texas (UNT) has withdrawn its proposal to create the state's first online public school, benefiting both families wanting to do home schooling and rural Texas students who live a great distance from the closest school. The UNT proposal known as the New Texas Academy had planned to use former Secretary of Education William Bennett s company K12 Inc. as the service provider for the curriculum. The Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE), which represents 100,000 public school educators, led the successful opposition effort. Executive Director of ATPE, Doug Rogers, reflected, "[t]here is no need to rush and create an program that has been a source of so much controversy."
