In Britain, National Teacher Strike Averted

December 19, 2003

If you think that American teachers are averse to standardized tests, try Britain. The nation’s largest teachers union tried to stage a boycott in response to formal standardized testing of 7- to 11-year olds. More than eight out of ten members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT)–over 30,000 teachers–voted yes. Nevertheless, since the turnout of teachers was only 34%, the teachers will not go forth with their boycott and the tests can go on as planned.
