Delaware Posts Teacher Standards

The Delaware Department of Education has announced new accountability standards for teachers that include student achievement (as measured by standardized tests) as one of the five factors on which teachers will be evaluated. (The others are the more typical fare: planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities.) While some members of the school board expressed support for the move, the Delaware State Education Association denounced the focus on test scores as "outrageously unfair," claiming grades, student work, and other factors should be taken into account. If the standards are passed by the State Board of Education later this month, officials plan to pilot the program next year and go wholesale in July 2005.
