The great divide continues: slow growth in teacher diversity

August 19, 2013

The National Center for Education Statistics last week
released findings from the 2011-2012 School and Staffing Survey which contains the latest
data on student and teacher populations. The following graph shows that the percentage of minority teachers has
not kept pace with minority student population, a fact also noted in our Teacher Prep Review

Private and Public
School Student/Teacher Populations

Data Source: NCES

There is some good news, however. Our Review
found that there are 83 notable teacher preparation programs working to make a
change by admitting very capable candidates who will also add to the diversity of
the teacher workforce. We sincerely hope to find many more programs on this
list in our next edition of the
Review.

Check out our Selection Criteria findings for more information about
these programs.
